Pentagon Plans to Weaponise AI for Propaganda

US Special Operations document reveals intent to use AI to disseminate propaganda and counteract “non-aligned” arguments.

Details. A Pentagon document revealed that within the next 5 to 7 years, the US plans to acquire an effective machine learning software for use in information warfare.

► With minimal human oversight, the software aims to swarm the internet with bots and interact with people online in order to counter or suppress dissenting arguments, and even produce reference material to reinforce supportive arguments and messages.

► The AI tool should analyse data from the profiles, networks, and systems of individuals or groups that seek to counter or discredit official narratives, and use this information to craft targeted propaganda aimed at influencing them.

► The plan seeks to replicate tactics already employed by China and Russia. GoLaxy, developed by the Chinese firm Beijing Thinker, is a leading tool in state-aligned influence operations and has been deployed in campaigns targeting Hong Kong and Taiwan.

Context. Over the past 40 years, China has risen to challenge US hegemony, establishing itself as the primary imperialist opponent of American imperialism. Both states have increasingly relied on technological tools, including AI, to shape “harmful” narratives abroad and at home, intensifying the global race for information control.

► China intensified the race for AI when, in January 2025, it unveiled DeepSeekR1, challenging the monopoly held by ChatGPT and other American AI models.

► Recently, the US commissioned four senior AI company leaders into the US military and implemented Trump’s ban on so-called “woke AI,” effectively regulating the industry, acknowledging that AI will play a critical role in shaping how Americans “consume information”.
